Human Science
Scope, perspective, methods and ethics
Human science makes a claim natural science never has to: that behaviour, belief, and social life can be studied the way a chemical reaction or a rock formation can, through observation, hypothesis, and test. But people are not inert. A classification that names a kind of person, the securely attached infant, the child viewer of television, changes the behaviour of the people it describes, in a way no chemical compound ever has. The same experimental method that revealed how far ordinary people would go in obeying an authority could not, in the end, settle whether its own participants believed what they were being told. Human science studies knowers using knowers, and a tool built to measure one thing does not always survive being pointed at the other.

The four pages of this theme examine what it means to study people using methods built to study anything else. The Scope page asks how human science can classify its own nine-odd disciplines when the act of studying people may not be one method at all. The Perspective page asks whose sample, which classification, and whose economic model gets to stand in for humans in general. The Methods and Tools page asks what reliability and validity actually require once the person being measured can read the measurement and respond to it. The Ethics page asks what a human scientist owes the person being studied, and what the resulting knowledge is later allowed to do.

How can human beings study human beings? Core Lesson 1 already drew on human science before the course had named the area. This page asks whether subjects like psychology, sociology, and economics share one common method, or whether they are united by something else: the attempt to understand people, behaviour, society, institutions, and meaning.

Whose version of human behaviour gets treated as normal? This page asks how perspective shapes human science: who gets studied, who gets named, and who benefits from the categories we use. Psychology, diagnosis, and economics all claim to describe people, but each can mistake one group’s experience for human nature, or one society’s values for common sense.

Can a method create the answer it claims to discover? This page asks what makes evidence in human science trustworthy. Surveys can steer opinions, tests can mistake one culture’s behaviour for a universal standard, and observation can miss the meaning behind what people do. Reliability, validity, and representativeness matter most when the people being studied can notice, interpret, and respond.

What do researchers owe to the people they study? This page asks why ethics in human science is not only about avoiding harm. Consent, deception, and distress matter, but so does what happens after a finding leaves the study. Labels, files, scores, and diagnoses can shape real lives, and even careful description can become a form of power.
